Street dogs aren’t really a problem in the UK, but in other countries they are seen as a pest – harbouring disease, breeding unchecked and acting as a potential health hazard to members of the general public.

Bulgaria has a particular problem with street dogs, which is where Street Hearts BG comes in. Set up about a year ago by Emma and Anthony, the charity provides neutering, community education, shelters, care and rehabilitation for street dogs in Bulgaria, as well as trying to place the dogs in home across Europe. As a charity fundraising is critical, which is where patron Kate Lamb comes in.

Kate will be well known to many as Delia Busby in the hit BBC TV series Call the Midwife. What’s perhaps less well known is that when she’s not appearing on our screens or treading the board, Kate spends a lot of time training and rehabilitating street dogs, though that could be about to change. To help raise £10,000 for Street Hearts BG, Kate is undertaking a 2,500-kilometre bike ride, from Bulgaria to London. Crossing six countries and taking about five weeks, Kate will be joined by Scout, a rescue dog she has adopted and bringing back to the UK. Together, they’ll follow the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania, then along the Danube and the Rhine. The continental European stretch ends at Hook of Holland, before a ferry to Harwich and the last leg to London. After the first week, there’ll be no support vehicle, and even some wild camping!

To do all that, Kate and Scout need some support, and we’re delighted to announce that we’re going to sponsoring their incredible trip. To that end, we’ve donated five weeks’ worth of ORIJEN freeze-dried foods to Kate, to make sure Scout gets all the Biologically Appropriate nutritional support that she needs. In the first of our new blog post series, we couldn’t think of a better way to start then to catch up with Max the Springer Spaniel, our lively brand ambassador for ACANA. Boy has he been busy!

Max certainly makes the most of his life in the Lake District, walking, swimming and jetty-jumping. His Facebook page is packed full of fun videos and photos of his doggy workouts in the water. Local Celebrity

Max is clearly a celebrity in his own right, with a very loyal following both on Facebook and in his local area. He recently received a letter from a local school pupil (he may have needed some help opening it) who wanted to tell him how much he had inspired her to be brave. Max visited the school and the children loved meeting him and learning all about his life. Being fed by ACANA means Max always looks his best for these events with his glossy coat and sparkling teeth!

Introducing Paddy

Max’s new brother Paddy joined the family in March, and everyone has fallen in love with Paddy as much as they have fallen in love with Max. Paddy is a puppy who certainly loves to chew and play, and currently has a penchant for destroying toys! He is also inheriting his brother’s love for the water. Paddy is growing fast, and at his weigh-in at the end of June he tipped the scales at a healthy 16.8kg at the age of 22 weeks! Owner Kerry acknowledges that Paddy’s healthy growth can be attributed to his love of ACANA:

“I’d just like to point out the food he is on is excellent, thank you ACANA UK & IRELAND, he loves the Puppy and Junior, it hardly lands in his bowl but it’s gone!”

It’s All For Charity

Much of the work that Kerry does with Max and Paddy is for charity, including their recent charity walk on 23rd July which raised an incredible £868.00 for Freedom Wizard. The charity helps those with limited mobility access to the fells in its fleet of all terrain mountain wheelchairs. It certainly looked like they all had a wonderful day. Their next charity event is being help on Saturday 23^rd September, and more details can be found here.

Birthday Boy

Finally, we need to mention that it’s Max’s birthday on 12th August and the ACANA team are busy planning what to give him! We can’t wait to see how he celebrates another fun-packed year, with the help of ACANA giving him everything that he needs for a lively Springer’s lifestyle.  We don’t doubt that next year will continue to more action packed than ever and full of fun, laugher and adventure. There might even be some jetty-jumping on the cards too…

Buggy was chosen because he has overcome real adversity, thanks to his owner Claire, the Cats Protection Belfast and Noel Fitzpatrick. ORIJEN has provided Buggy with the Biologically Appropriate diet, varied in fresh whole meats, to help him become the warrior cat that he is today.

Buggy’s Story

Buggy and his brothers were brought into Cats Protection Belfast in September 2014 from a house completely over-run with cats, and with a lot of in-breeding.  The kittens were extremely malnourished and full of fleas and worms.

There were also other complications. Because of the in-breeding, Buggy’s mouth joins directly to his nose and every joint in his hind legs was deformed.  The prognosis was dire and Claire was told that Buggy’s hind legs were not only inoperable, but they would also deteriorate at such a rate that he would need to be euthanised before his first birthday.

Claire, a volunteer at Cats Protection Belfast, was even more determined to adopt him when she heard this prognosis. In a last-ditch attempt, Claire contacted Fitzpatrick Referrals and having looked at Buggy’s scans, Noel Fitzpatrick believed that he could help Buggy.

After a challenging journey to take him to Surrey, Noel carried out more detailed scans on Buggy and it was agreed that he would return in the June for surgery once his growth plates were fully formed. It was then that Noel operated on both his knees and hocks in his hind legs.  He had four weeks of physio before removing the external fixators on his legs.

Six weeks of room rest followed, as well as weekly video progress calls with Noel, before Buggy was finally signed off.  Since then, Buggy has been zooming around the house, learning to jump and enjoying the cat play run attached to the back of the house.

We’re thrilled to announce that Max the Springer Spaniel, whose daily adventures in the Lake District can be found on his very own Facebook page, has become ACANA’s official ambassador in the UK.
